The History International GCSE course

Studying history enables us to understand the social and economic forces which have shaped the world we live in today.  Were Victorian values a good thing?  How has the role of women changed through the ages? Our History course focuses on British social and economic history from 1750 to 1950 and takes you back in time to answer these and many other questions.

Each lesson of the course contains numerous thought-provoking activities, reinforced with a wealth of illustrations, diagrams and summaries.

The Oxford Open Learning course History IGCSE course is for syllabus (4HI1) for exams in Summer 2022 and beyond. This course contains the following four modules:

  • Changes in Medicine, c1848-c1948
  • The USA, 1918-41
  • Germany: Development of Dictatorship, 1918-45
  • A Divided Union, Civil Rights in the USA, 1945- 74

Students will be offered opportunities to analyse, interpret and evaluate primary and secondary evidence, question sources of information, and learn how to present their own views in well-structured essays.  The course includes the study of visual and online sources as well as a wide variety of materials in print.

Oxford Open Learning’s International GCSE History course is designed to prepare students for the Edexcel Syllabus 4HI1 specification for exams in Summer 2022 and beyond.

Summer 2022 exams and beyond:

  • Paper 1: Depth Studies, 1 hour and 30 minutes. 50%
  • Paper 2: Investigation and Breadth Studies, 1 hour and 30 minutes. 50%

This course will be graded using the new 9-1 grading system.

History IGCSE FAQs

The international GCSE History is of the same level as a GCSE and is examined by Edexcel, one of the UKs most trusted examination boards. A key difference is that IGCSE History does not include classroom controlled assessment or coursework, making it convenient for distance learners. The History International GCSE qualification is accepted as at least the equivalent of GCSE in UK sixth form colleges, FE colleges, universities and other HE institutions.
