History IGCSE Distance Learning Course

Syllabus

Oxford Open Learning's History IGCSE course is designed to prepare students for the Edexcel IGCSE in History (4HI0) for first examination in June 2011. 

Assessment

Assessment is by one 2 hour 30 minute written examination. There is no coursework.


Course structure

The OOL course is designed to match the Edexcel 4HI0 specification which is divided into four selected modules, as follows:

  • Development of dictatorship: Germany, 1918-1945
  • Depression and recovery in the USA, 1919-1945
  • Colonial rule and the nationalist challenge in India, 1919-1947
  • Change in Africa: from colonialism to independence, 1945-2000

Covering key events in twentieth century world history, the course includes the rise of Hitler and the Nazis, and the impact of the Second World War on Germany; the Wall Street Crash, Roosevelt and the New Deal; Gandhi, Congress and Indian Independence; and finally, independence movements in Africa and the end of apartheid.

Students will be offered opportunities to analyse, interpret and evaluate primary and secondary evidence, question sources of information, and learn how to present their own views in well-structured essays.  The course includes study of visual and online sources as well as a wide variety of materials in print.  For further details, click to access the course introduction in the right hand sidebar of this page.
