A Brand New Business Course for a changing business environment

This is a brand new Business A level course is for first examination in summer 2017. It replaces the old A level Business Studies course.  For a full overview of the changes to A level please see our “A level Changes” page.

Business  A level will give you a thorough grounding in the skills required for today’s rapidly changing business world.

Employers are always keen to employ individuals with a good understanding of business and this course will provide you with exactly that. You’ll gain skills in all aspects of running a business and we even cover the skills required to start your own.

This is a brand new course and exiting course which changes the emphasis of the subject to genuinely make the student a better business person.

This course has been designed to help students develop key business skills which will help them both continue on to  university and improve their employability.  Students will learn to

  • analyse data
  • think critically about issues
  • Make better business decisions

The course itself will be split into the following 10 modules

Business AS Level

  1. What is business?
  2. Managers, leadership and decision making
  3. (Decision making to improve) marketing performance
  4. (Decision making to improve) operational performance
  5. (Decision making to improve) financial performance
  6. (Decision making to improve) human resource performance

Additional topics for the Business A level

  1. Analysing the strategic position of a business
  2. Choosing strategic direction
  3. Strategic methods: how to pursue strategies
  4. Managing strategic change

The new Business A level course prepares students for the AQA business syllabus 7130/7131.


AS Level Assessment

The AS level component of the course can be taken separately. There are two examinations of 1 hour 30 minutes.

Full A Level Assessment

The full A level is examined by 3 examinations of 2 hours which cover the full AS and A level syllabus.

Whilst this course is split into AS and A2 sections, in order to be awarded an A level students will need to sit the AS and the A2 components of the course in one summer examination sitting.  The AS level may be examined and awarded separately but will not count towards the A level award.


Prior Study

You will need to have 4 GCSE’s grade C or above to study this A level.
