The AAT Course
In July 2010, the AAT will implement a new set of standards issued by the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). The QCF is a new framework for creating and accrediting qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The QCF is a new way of recognizing skills and achievement through the reward of credit for units and qualifications. It aims to provide greater flexibility and choice to gaining full qualifications. The QCF will replace the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) by the end of 2010.
How does this affect the AAT Accounting Qualification?
The Association of Accounting Technicians has issued information on changes to the AAT Accounting Qualification as a result of the new QCF framework. Please click here for details. The new framework for assessment of the AAT Accounting Qualification will come into effect at the beginning of July.
With this in mind, we are currently developing a new AAT course to meet the new QCF standards at Oxford Open Learning. Subject to accreditation by the AAT, the new course will lead to a level 2 Certificate in Accounting, and will be available shortly.
The level 2 Certificate in Accounting course will include units on:
- Basic Accounting I
- Basic Accounting 2
- Basic Costing
- Working effectively in Accounting and Finance
- Computerised Accounting
Basic Accounting I will introduce students to the double entry bookkeeping system and associated documents and processes. The course progresses to the stage of extracting an initial trial balance before any adjustments are made.
Basic Accounting II looks in more detail at the cash book and petty cash book and introduces the reconciliation of control accounts. Students will also learn to make adjustments through the journal and re-draft the initial trial balance once adjustments have been made.
Basic Costing introduces the workings of a basic costing system and its place in the organisational information systems, as well as recording and extracting data and providing information on actual and expected costs.
Working Effectively in Accounting and Finance is designed to develop a range of transferable skills to enable a student to work independently and as part of a team. Attention is also given here to establishing an effective standard of literacy and numeracy.
Computerised Accounting This unit introduces a computerised accounting application (Sage) and shows students how to input and process data for business transactions including sales and purchases, receipts and payments, and also prepare management and period end reports.
Course structure
Each lesson begins with a set of aims and an explanation of the lesson's place within the context of the course as a whole. Effective learning is developed through frequent activities and self-assessment tests. The course includes Tutor-marked Assignments and a practice exam.
Assessment
The AAT will assess skills and knowledge in one overall assessment. This will be entirely computer based. The QCF will hold each student's credit and qualification achievement records records in a central database under the student's unique learner number. Our Exams Officer will be on hand to guide you through the process of registering for your exam.
Special Requirements
A reasonable level of proficiency in arithmetical skills is assumed.
